The
Peoria Area Food Bank was formed in 1984 to help supplement
the dietary and nutritional needs of low-income families.
Counties served by the Peoria Area Food Bank are Peoria,
Tazewell, Woodford, Fulton, Mason, McLean, Marshall, DeWitt
and Livingston counties.
The Peoria Area Food Bank is a member
of America's Second Harvest, the nation's largest hunger-relief
organization, and is active with the Illinois Food Bank
Association, whose mission is to educate the public about
the purpose of Second Harvest food banks serving Illinois
counties, and the role the food banks play in addressing
hunger.
The Food Bank provides 120 active food
pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, drug and alcohol
rehabilitation centers, senior housing, youth detention
centers, and low-income day-care centers with large quantities
of food from name brand manufacturers and USDA commodities
on a daily basis.
In 2007 the food bank distributed almost
1,400,000 pounds of food.
The
Food Bank relies heavily on corporate manufacturers for
food donations. It also receives support from individuals
and local businesses, and actively participates in the
annual Peoria Area Anti-Hunger Coalition Can-a-thon and
the National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive.
